The Maritime Medical Service is the central maritime-medical institution of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The Maritime Medical Service, based in Hamburg, is responsible for advising, handling and controlling maritime medical matters on the basis of § 1 No. 6b Seeaufgabengesetz (Act on the Tasks of Germany in the Field of Maritime Navigation).
It is part of the Ship Safety Division, which belongs to the Berufsgenossenschaft für Verkehrswirtschaft Post-Logistik Telekommunikation (BG Verkehr).
The Maritime Medical Service is under the technical supervision of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) in Germany.
The Maritime Medical Service, certified according to EN ISO 9001 and EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency), centrally controls and monitors over 20.000 medical fitness examinations per year.
The recognized medical practitioners are reviewed on the ground on a regular basis.
As a cooperation partner, the Maritime Medical Service provides advice on the content of the e-health platform.
